Hybrid self-propelled anti-aircraft gun

Monday, December 8, 2014

I recently discovered several Patton tanks tucked away in a box that I had modified years ago. It's basically the tank hull sporting an anti-aircraft turret taken from God knows what (and is somewhat reminiscent of the M42 Duster). Maybe someone out there recognizes the turret and can fill us in.

UPDATE - December 12th at 9:32 AM: Found a pic of what may be the turret used...

I think it's a turret from Payton tank maybe? I seem to recall having a tank with a turret like that, and I know I had Payton stuff back in the day. Anyway I did some searches online and couldn't find any Payton tank photos, so who knows...

I posted a pic of what I think is the type of tank I pillaged for the gun turret.

Awesome!

I have half-a-dozen of the Payton vehicles, but the turret looks better on the Tim-Mee M48 chassis.

It is just luck that the colors are a close match? (My Payton self-propelled AA guns are a much brighter green than my Tim-Mee M48s...)

PS - I've also played "swap-the-turret". If you swap turrets between a Tim-Mee armored car and a Tim-Mee M48, you get a couple of interesting vehicles.

The armored car with a tank turret looks like a kind of retro-proto-Styker, or some other version of an upgunned, wheeled APC.

The tank body with the APC turret reminds me of the Soviet/Russian tracked APCs like the BTR-50 and BTR-T, or even a tracked fire-fighting vehicle.

I got lucky with the color match. That much I do remember.

I've seen the Patton tank with a scout car turret but not the other way around. I'll have to try that.

I once did a great 50s space car by using the scout car body, and replacing the turret with a half of hosery egg, then painting with aluminum the whole vehicle. Add some old aircraft decals and a bit of garish red and yellow details!
